The White House announced that California is among nine states that will receive a collective $500 million dollars in federal grant money to fund education reform.
Grants will range from $50-$100 million, depending on the plan that was submitted by the state to The Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge and the state's population.
President Obama announced the education reform initiative in July 2009, inspiring school districts to rethink their approaches to learning and encourage their states to apply for funding that would enable them to do so.
Thirty-five states submitted applications that outlined how they would make their schools more innovative.
California requested $52,572,395, although it is not likely it will receive the entire amount, according to ed.gov. The site cites "insufficient funds."
Awards will be confirmed on December 31.
