CHP: Driver Dies After Plowing Through Highway 101 Guardrail

Witnesses said the driver was driving erratically before the Peninsula crash.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA- A person died after driving through a U.S. Highway 101 off-ramp guardrail in South San Francisco on Wednesday evening, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The first report of the crash came in at 6:28 p.m. on southbound Highway 101 at Oyster Point Boulevard. The driver failed to make a nearly 90-degree turn on the off-ramp before going through the guardrail and ending up in a grassy area, CHP Officer Vu Williams said.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:45 p.m., CHP officials said.

The San Mateo County coroner’s office is not yet releasing the person’s identity.

The driver was not ejected from the vehicle and may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. CHP investigators will find out from the coroner whether a medical condition or the crash was the cause of death, Williams said.
