Menlo Park CA: West Nile Virus Detected In Scrub Jay
Questions or comments: 650-344-8592

The San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District reports:
We have detected West Nile virus in a scrub jay from Menlo Park. This is the second positive bird in Menlo Park this year, and the third in the county as a whole. The detection of virus in dead birds is not, in itself, unusual. We find the virus in dead birds every year.
District staff will be trapping mosquitoes in the area around the positive bird. We do not currently have any plans to apply adulticides in that area, but that may change if West Nile Virus is found in adult mosquitoes there. The Mosquito Control staff continue to do intensive surveillance and control for mosquito larvae throughout Menlo Park and the number of mosquitoes there remains low. I will update you next week when we have more information.
