Tad Taube is the founder and chairman of Taube Philanthropies, through which he awards grants to charitable programs and initiatives around the world. Heβs overseen hundreds of millions of dollars in philanthropic donations and has pledged to give most of his wealth to philanthropy as a signatory of the Gates/Buffett Giving Pledge.
Taube was born in Poland, but fled the country just eight weeks before Hitler invaded in 1939. He and a family friend boarded a train out of Warsaw with the idea of making it to the United States via Paris. As a Polish Jew, he remembers the fearful journey through the heart of Nazi Germany, with SS officers scrutinizing his identification papers at each station.

Taube was finally reunited with his family in New York City after detention in Ellis Island. The family, nearly penniless, moved to Los Angeles a year later. Within a few years, family circumstances had improved and Taube was able to attend Stanford University, where he participated in the Air Force ROTC program and graduated with a bachelorβs degree in industrial engineering in 1954.
After college, Taube gained U.S. citizenship and joined the Air Force as a Communications Officer, responsible for installation of ground-to-air landing systems at bases throughout the Western U.S. Following his military service, Taube returned to Stanford where he earned a masterβs degree in industrial management. After a brief stint in the then-emerging high-tech industry, Taube pursued a successful career in real estate investment and management.
In 1968, San Francisco apparel giants Joseph and Stephanie Koret came to Taube and his Woodmont Companies to help diversify their assets in real estate. These investments soon dwarfed the Koretβs apparel fortune. When their company, Koret of California, came to the brink of insolvency, they turned to Taube for his investment expertise and appointed him Chairman and CEO at an emergency board meeting. The next six years were challenging for the struggling company, but under Taubeβs leadership, it was restored to profitability and in 1979, the company was sold to Levi Strauss & Co. for just under $100 million. After engineering the sale, Taube returned to his real estate investment activities.
It was around this time that the Koret Foundation was established, after Mrs. Koret passed away and her share of Koret community property was reserved for charitable giving. Taube and three close associates joined Mr. Koret as Directors of the fledgling foundation. Only two years later, Mr. Koret passed, leaving his estate to enlarge the corpus of the Koret Foundation, and appointing Taube to lead it. The Koret Foundation prospered over the next 35 years under Taubeβs leadership in its philanthropic reach and growth of assets. Taubeβs interest and involvement in philanthropic entrepreneurship also evolved during that period, leading to his founding of Taube Philanthropies, comprising the Taube Family Foundation and Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture. Taube Philanthropies, in collaboration with the Koret Foundation and other charitable organizations, became a force of philanthropic support for organizations and educational facilities in the Bay Area, Israel and Poland. Seeking to devote his full attention to Taube Philanthropies, Taube retired as President of the Koret Foundation in 2015 and will retire as a Director later this year.
Totally focused on leading Taube Philanthropies, Taubeβs initiatives span a wide and diverse universe of charitable enterprises engaged in civic and cultural life, education, youth and sports initiatives, public policy research, and the strengthening of Jewish culture. Among the hundreds of organizations supported by Taube Philanthropies are Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, the Commonwealth Club of California, Jewish Family and Childrenβs Services, the Bay Lights, the San Francisco Opera, Jewish Community Centers in the Bay Area and Poland, Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford, Stanfordβs Taube Center for Jewish Studies, Hebrew Union Collegeβs Taube Campus in Jerusalem, the Polin Museum in Warsaw, the Magnes Museum in Berkeley, the UC Theatre/Taube Family Music Hall in Berkeley, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Gladstone Institute and joint ventures with the San Francisco 49ers, the Golden State Warriors, and the San Jose Sharks in support of local organizations that have served over 1 million underserved youngsters since 2012.
Taube Philanthropies maintains offices in Belmont, Berkeley, Warsaw and Jerusalem.

Β· A description of an incredible live auction item that will be part of the program
Description of Discover Poland - Live Auction Package
A live auction is traditionally part of the fun of the San Mateo County History Makers dinner. This year, Taube Philanthropies is making possible a unique seven-day tour of Poland for six individuals, which includes international airfare, stays at four and five star hotels, ground transportation and an exclusive itinerary.
Organized by Taube Jewish Heritage Tours, the program starts in Warsaw with tours of historic sites and the new $160 million POLIN Museum, which depicts 1,000 years of Polish-Jewish history. On the third day, the six will visit Krakow and will be treated to a visit to the Emanuel Ringelbaum Jewish Historical Institute.
They will also drop by the Zabynskiβs Villa at the Warsaw Zoo (the Zabynski Family managed the Warsaw Zoo and hid Jews on Zoo property during World War II at the risk of their lives). They will attend the evening festival concert at the Tempel Synagogue. The next day will be highlighted by a walk through Krakowβs Old Town (which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site) and a tour of the Galicia Jewish Museum. The six will then be taken through Birkenau and the Auschwitz State Museum. Other day trips will feature excursions to the fomer shtetls (villages) of Chmielnik, PiΕczΓ³w, and SzydΕΓ³w.
