About 80 volunteers, many of them students, showed up on a beautiful day to collect what they could off pre-selected areas of the city.

“They take their bags, one for trash and one for recyclables," says Millbrae Environmental Programs Manager Shelly Reider, "and pick up paper, cans, and bottles for recycling, and what is trash will go to the landfill."

Reider points proudly to the efforts Millbrae has made in becoming a greener pasture. She notes the city ban of polystyrene food service ware in January 2008, and says a ban on single-use plastic carryout bags will start September 1.

Millbrae has made dramatic progress since 1992 in diverting waste that would otherwise sent to local landfills, as mandated by the state. Initially, cities were told to divert at least 50 per cent of their waste. The city currently diverts about 67%.

Students participating in Saturday's cleanup came from Taylor Middle School, St. Dunstan Catholic School, the Green Youth Alliance from Mills High School, 6 and 7-year-old Cub Scouts from Pack 355, YES (Youth Engaged in Services), and the Youth Advisory Committee.
