Assemblyman Jerry Hill Honors Millbrae Teacher
Spring Valley Elementary third grade teacher Kathleen Cory receives honor.
A proud cheer erupted from students, parents and teachers alike today as Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, announced that third grade teacher Kathleen Cory was the 19th District Teacher of the Year.
Hill’s visit, before school today, was a surprise for the assembled students, staff and parents. A trio of ‘congratulations’ balloons, though, made it apparent that something was happening.
“We love our teachers, don’t we?,” said Hill after an introduction from Spring Valley Principal Vahn Phayprasert. “That’s why it’s so essential we recognize their hard work.”
The crowd echoed Hill’s recognition when Cory was named Teacher of the Year, cheering and applauding her as she made her way to the podium to accept her plaque, flowers and ‘congratulations’ balloons.
“It just makes you even prouder of your school,” said attending parent Natalie Roxas. “She’s a great teacher.”
Cory has been teaching in Millbrae since 1973, has taught special education, middle school and now teaches third grade while also overseeing music programs and productions such as “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”
“She’s here until 9 or 9:30 every night,” said Spring Valley Secretary Denise Coffaro.
Each year Hill’s office recognizes a teacher from within the 19th Assembly District as teacher of the year, who “exemplifies what education and teaching is all about,” said Hill. The 19th district comprises most of northern San Mateo County.
“She’s just always there, making sure that the educational experience is all that it should be,” Hill said.
