Millbrae 101 Express Lanes Construction Update

This week, nightly freeway lane closures will occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 10:00 PM – 5:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday.

Project construction from Whipple Avenue to I-380 in San Mateo County is underway! Caltrans is constructing express lanes on U.S. 101 from the San Mateo County/Santa Clara County line to I-380 in South San Francisco. Construction is expected to occur between 2019 and 2022.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) to I-380 (in South San Francisco) will include demolition of a portion of a sound wall, removing vegetation, installing temporary lighting, installing concrete barriers next to the travel lanes, installing traffic signals on ramps, installing construction/detour signs, installing temporary traffic detectors, temporary freeway striping, and other related construction activities. This work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps. Sound wall work will occur on local city streets adjacent to U.S. 101.

Freeway Lane Closures: This week, nightly freeway lane closures will occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 10:00 PM – 5:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday night. Expect delays below 15 minutes from 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary, nightly ramp closures will occur in/near Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont, San Mateo, Foster City, Burlingame, Millbrae, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Ramp closures could occur on both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.

Ramp closures will:

• Be displayed on changeable message signs in the construction zone

• Take place at night

• Last three to eight hours

• Reopen by 6:00 AM daily

• Have detour signs posted

Short-Term nighttime ramp closures are possible this week at the following locations (listed from south to north). Check signs for exact closure times and locations.

• Southbound Brittan Avenue Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Holly Street On/Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Ralston Avenue Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Marine Parkway/Harbor Boulevard On/Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Marine Parkway On/Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Hillsdale Boulevard On/Off Ramp

• U.S. 101/Route 92 Connector Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound 3rd/4th Avenue On/Off Ramp

• Northbound Dore Avenue Off Ramp

• Southbound Poplar Avenue On/Off Ramp

• Northbound Peninsula Avenue Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Broadway On/Off Ramp

• Northbound Broadway/Old Bayshore Highway On Ramp

• Northbound Millbrae Avenue Off Ramp

• Northbound San Francisco Airport Off Ramp

South of Whipple Ave: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) will include minor construction activities to connect to existing electrical connections. This will include work on the freeway shoulders and ramps. Delays are not anticipated for this work. Short-Term nighttime ramp closures are possible this week at the following locations. Check signs for exact closure times and locations.

• Northbound Embarcadero Road/Oregon Expressway On Ramp

• Northbound University Avenue On Ramp

• U.S. 101/Route 84 Connector Ramp

Upcoming Construction: Future construction activities for the next few weeks will include demolishing a portion of the sound wall on South Bayshore Boulevard, removing vegetation, installing concrete barriers next to the travel lanes, installing traffic signals on ramps, installing temporary traffic detectors, installing temporary lighting, drilling holes in concrete to prepare for electrical connections, demolishing portions of concrete barrier, work to relocate a sewer line under the demolished sound wall, and other related construction activities.

Sound Wall Demolition Construction Timing: Demolition of the sound wall on North Bayshore Blvd adjacent to U.S. 101 begins the week of March 8, 2020. The work will involve removal of the sound wall from Monte Diablo Ave to Dore Ave. This section of the sound wall will be reconstructed by October 2020.

Demolition of the sound wall on South Bayshore Boulevard adjacent to U.S. 101 from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue is anticipated to begin late March 2020. This section of the sound wall will be reconstructed by July 2020.

Sound Wall Demolition Parking Information: On-street parking along North and South Bayshore Blvd in the construction area will be unavailable and North and South Bayshore Blvd will experience intermittent one-way traffic during sound wall removal and reconstruction efforts.
