Millbrae 101 Express Lanes Construction Update – Week Of April 27th

Nightly freeway lane closures will occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday night.

Construction activities on U.S. 101 will include; continued work on the sound walls on Bayshore Boulevard in San Mateo (both from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue), removing guard rails, installing temporary lighting, traffic signals on ramps, temporary detour signs, temporary traffic detectors, electrical service work, drainage systems, a new sewer system, and other related construction activities. Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while the sound wall and sewer work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. More information is provided below.

Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures will occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday night. Due to low traffic volumes, project related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans will continue to monitor traffic delays and adjust as necessary.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures will occur during the night in/near Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, Foster City, Burlingame, Millbrae, and San Bruno, and during the day in San Mateo. Ramp closures could occur on both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.

Ramp closures will:

• Be displayed on changeable message signs in the construction zone

• Begin after 7 PM and reopen by 6 AM daily

• Have detour signs posted

Short-Term nighttime ramp closures are possible this week at the following locations (listed from south to north). Check signs for exact closure times and locations.

• Eastbound/Westbound Whipple Avenue On Ramp

• Northbound/Southbound Whipple Avenue Off Ramp

• Northbound Holly Street Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Holly Street On Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound East Hillsdale Boulevard On/Off Ramp

• Northbound/Southbound U.S. 101/Eastbound/Westbound Route 92 Connector Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Fashion Island Boulevard On Ramp

• Northbound Kehoe Avenue Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound 3rd/4th Avenue On Ramp

• Northbound Dore Avenue Off Ramp

• Northbound Peninsula Avenue Off Ramp (Closures are possible until 7:00 AM at this location)

• Northbound Anza Boulevard Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Broadway Off Ramp

• Eastbound/Westbound Millbrae Avenue On/Off Ramp

• Southbound SFO Domestic Terminals On Ramp

Intermittent daytime closures are possible (Monday through Friday) at the following location from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Check signs for exact closure times and locations.

• Northbound Dore Avenue Off Ramp

Upcoming Construction: Future construction activities for the next few weeks will include; removing vegetation, installing concrete barriers next to the travel lanes, installing traffic signals on ramps, installing temporary traffic detectors, installing construction/detour signs, installing temporary lighting, demolishing portions of concrete barrier, preparing underground utilities for sewer work, and other related construction activities.

Sound Wall Demolition Construction Timing: Demolition of the sound wall on North Bayshore Blvd adjacent to U.S. 101 is currently scheduled to begin the week of April 26th. The work will involve removal of the wall from Dore Ave. to East Poplar Ave. in San Mateo. This section of the sound wall will be relocated and rebuilt by August 2020. Nearby residents and travelers can expect to see construction crews from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Sound Wall Demolition Parking Information: On-street parking along North Bayshore Blvd in the construction area will be restricted and North Bayshore Blvd will experience intermittent one-way traffic control for the duration of sound wall construction.
