Millbrae Receives Recognition As 'Tree City USA'

MILLBRAE, CA – The City of Millbrae was recently named a 2016 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.

Millbrae achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: 1) a tree board or department, 2) a tree-care ordinance, 3) an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and 4) an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

“It is a great honor to be recognized as a Tree City USA, and is confirming of our work to protect and enhance Millbrae’s trees and parks,” said Millbrae Mayor Reuben Holober. “Even when a tree is removed because of disease or rot, we have made it a priority to replace them to ensure our urban trees and forests continue to thrive.”

Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, and provide important wildlife habitat.

“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,” said Danb Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”
