Millbrae Youth Center Needs Volunteers, Supplies

Cleanup days scheduled on April 23 and April 30 at former Lions scout house.

The International Facility Management Association is on April 23 and 30 at the Millbrae Community Youth Center, and it's seeking volunteers and supplies to help transform the former Millbrae Lions scout house.

“How many volunteers we get determines how much work we can do,” said Wendy Newcomer, volunteer captain and director of community outreach and special events for IFMA.

Rebuilding Together Peninsula linked IFMA with the scout house project to sponsor rehabilitation efforts coinciding with National Rebuilding Day on April 30.

IFMA is also leading a rebuilding effort for the YMCA Silicon Valley Domestic Violence Department.

Construction experts and contractors will help direct the volunteers, Newcomer said.

“We like to try to utilize our resources so we can give as much as possible back to the community,” she said.

Newcomer said April 23 would be a preparation day and April 30 would be for finalizing work, which could include reconstructing a handicap ramp, painting, installing lighting and carpet.

Here’s a list of materials needed:

  • Ramp construction materials—either pressure treated for wood ramp or form materials for concrete ramp
  • Concrete and rebar for ramp
  • Handrails
  • Interior lighting fixtures
  • Raised planter and plant material for exterior entry area
  • Grab bars for restrooms

The former Millbrae Lions scout house, which is adjacent to , was shut down in 1999.

The Lions Club, the Millbrae School District and the city formed a partnership to raise enough money to renovate the facility for the benefit of youth by Jan. 1, 2012.

The Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Clubs could potentially run the scout house as an after-school clubhouse.

Denis Fama, fundraising chair for MCYC, said stakeholders in the project will have a summit meeting on April 30 with the Boys and Girls Clubs to determine next steps.

“We want to explore how we move our collaboration forward,” Fama said.
