My Daughter’s Lipstick Obsession

Should I be worried?

In the past six months, my daughter has become obsessed with lipstick. I say lipstick but it’s more those flavored (so gross) chapstick-like lip balms that are marketed towards young girls. (Thank you advertising geniuses, it worked!) She cannot get enough of them.

I will admit my fault in all of this. I wear lipstick on a daily basis. I also wear a lot of lip balm and she sees me apply it to my lips. Of course at a certain point, she said she wanted some and I put a little bit on her lips. No big deal. Or so I thought.

It has now become a daily obsession. She just wants lip balm all the time. She has ones with princesses on them, M&M’s, and even convinced her daddy to buy her one at Jamba Juice of all places. Everywhere we go - if she spots the colorful little tube of waxy goodness, she wants it. And no, we don’t buy them for her every time. She gets them for special occasions or as a special treat.

The other day I took her to Ulta with me. For those who don’t know, Ulta is a giant beauty store. Any makeup, nail polish or hair product you could ever want is in this store. While in there, she spots a lip balm…green and watermelon flavored. I wanted to barf, she thought it was the greatest thing she had ever seen. So I told her she could have it and then proceeded to use it against her to get her to behave. Terrible, I know. But it worked and I got to shop for lipstick and nail polish in peace!

As we are checking out, Madison says to me “Mom, these are lipsticks” as she points to a display of lipsticks and their samples. A woman in line behind me says to Madison, “You already know that those are lipsticks?” I didn’t know whether I should play it proud or embarrassed. I totally went with proud! I am a girl, after all.

So should I be worried? Probably not. I mean she’s a girl after all. As much as I have tried to not make her a super girlie-girl, she has become one on her own anyway. I’m pretty sure that she is more into the disgusting taste of those nasty lip balms than the actual idea of wearing lipstick.

This all leads me to the thought of my beautiful, fair-skinned daughter wanting to wear makeup… something that I started doing around the age of 12. Too early, in my opinion. I don’t want her to ever wear makeup. I hate having to wear it, but feel naked without it. It is a rare, and I do mean a rare occasion, to see me without makeup. There have been more Bigfoot sightings than there have been of me without makeup by anyone other than my husband.

Right now, I won’t worry too much about the lipstick obsession. I mean she is also obsessed with oatmeal at the moment. It’s what kids do. As long as she stops asking me to wear the chocolate flavored (I know, disgusting) one, then I won’t worry about this obsession.
