SOFTBALL: Carlmont Hammers Vikes in Bay Game

Scots deep lineup and five Mills errors make for long afternoon as hosts fall to 0-4 in PAL Bay.

The Score: Carlmont 17, Mills 1.

The Star: Mills High pitcher/third baseman Angie Ynostroza knocked in the lone run for the hosts as well as working in the circle for injured starter Julia Fernandez on Thursday. Though the Scots’ offense was a nightmare to handle, Ynostroza worked the strike zone and put out the fire with a 5-4 double play to close the fifth inning in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division game.

The Turning Point: Though Carlmont already had a solid lead, the fourth inning demoralized a Mills’ team that wasn’t able to get over the hump; allowing eight runs on seven hits as the Scots sent 12 batters to the plate.

The Quote: “Nothing… he didn’t tell us anything. It’s very frustrating as a pitcher to go out there and just have your teammates cheering you on but you have no sense of direction.” – Pitcher/third baseman Angie Ynostroza, frustrated with a lack of direction from her coach.

The Bottom Line: When a team is hot, it’s hard to stop, but that became an even harder task as Mills committed five errors. The outfield and infield both made crucial mistakes, all resulting in scores or plays that led to scores. Offensively, the Vikings weren’t able to string consecutive hits together as Carlmont pitchers Rebecca Faulkner and Aurora Stottler sealed the last four innings with relative ease.

Notes: Fernandez suffered a back injury after facing six batters in the first inning. She was replaced by Ynostroza, who was later relieved by Katelyn Warren in the fourth. “Today just wasn’t our day,” said Mills coach John Selvitella. “We had injuries, we couldn’t put our offense together and we didn’t make the simple plays on defense. We have to be fundamental if we are to win games.”
