Where to Watch Mavericks Invitational

The days of watching the Mavericks surf competition from the beaches and bluffs of Half Moon Bay are sadly long gone. For public safety — with beaches underwater during high tide with a big swell and bluffs that are environmentally sensitive and can’t handle crowds — people will have to descend elsewhere to view the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office who is urging the public to stay off the beaches and cliffs due to the high surf expected the day of the contest. 

The streets and paths leading to Pillar Point and the beaches and bluffs will be closed anyway by law enforcement agencies, including the San Mateo County Sheriff, California Parks, CHP, and San Mateo County Harbor District.

So where can you go to view the contest? Here are your options this year:

Princeton Harbor next to Mavericks

Pillar Point Harbor roads in Princeton will be closed to cars but there is designated parking ($20 at HMB Airport benefits Coastside Boys & Girls Club) nearby and people are encouraged to walk and ride their bikes. Once there, here's where you can go:

Mavericks Viewing Festival, 280 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay

Watch the big wave surf competition live at the Mavericks Viewing Festival with big screens, live music, food, beer and drinks and access to the Awards Ceremony. Gates open at 7:30 a.m., on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel & Spa.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, 390 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay

The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company will have a special Mavericks Contest menu featuring our award winning Mavericks Beers & Ales. All surf aficionados will be happy to view the contest on the big screens in the beach bar, in our restaurant and in Mavericks Beer Garden. After the contest, continue the party and rock out to the Big Dreamers starting at 7 p.m.

Old Princeton Landing, 460 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay

Watch the event live at the Princeton Landing. Owner Biran Overfelt is planning to have live coverage airing on seven of their flatscreens inside and out in their beer garden with food service from Silver Star Grill.
