In Home Care Information: 4 Easy Memory Improving Tips for Seniors information written by Stan Lawson of Sequoia Senior Solutions
Why did I try to put the keys into the fridge? You mean, my glasses that I have been looking for are on my head? I’d like to introduce you to my oldest friend, uh what’s her name. Why am I in the car and where was I going? If you are like me, you have had occasions like this, maybe your whole life. Brad Pitt just announced that he has “face blindness” meaning he doesn’t remember people’s faces, in a condition known as prosopagnosia. Pitt has yet to have the necessary tests to prove this; however, it is a real condition.
But as we age, we start to notice an increased number of alterations in our capability to remember things such as an appointment with the doctor, going into a room and not remembering why, and forgetting the name of someone during a conversation etc. We even sometimes forget why we started that conversation or where we were going with it.
Memory lapses happen in all phases of our life. But we become more concerned as we age. The actual fact is, memory loss in older individuals is not a normal aspect of aging; memory loss occurs because of natural disorders, damage to the brain, or neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. These are really what we are afraid of when we become concerned.
Juggling not allowed.
In order to improve your memory it is extremely important to limit disruptions and focus on an individual thing and get organized. A number of individuals get caught up in what they think of as multi-tasking; as a result they fail to do any of the things that they need to get done. Giving your undivided attention to a single task at hand will always improve your memory as well as improve your ability to achieve your goals. Focusing is important because your brain requires time to encode and decode the information properly; and if too many tasks are performed at the same time, your brain is likely to forget most of them. So if you want to remember something, stop multitasking. Don’t try to juggle all your tasks because you really can’t keep all those balls in the air anyway. If you have a lot of jobs to remember to complete, create a list that you can use to cross off each item as you finish it.The doctor is in.
Last but not the least taking excellent care of yourself and visiting the doctor regularly are very important. How are you going to approach talking to your doctor about everything that is important to you? Remember how no one really multi-tasks? Why not work on a list of issues you want to discuss with the doctor to make sure you don’t forget to talk to him about your thoughts about your memory? Be sure to ask him if any of your medications could be causing you problems.Takeaways:
- What we have learned is that memory loss may not be due to dementia, but to the normal changes of our brain was we age.
- We need to exercise our brains by challenging ourselves.
- No one can really multi-task. They just jump from thing to thing without accomplishing anything. Don’t do it.
