Dead Brush Was Cleared After A Hillside Fire In Mill Valley, Then Another Fire Broke Out

A vegetation fire was limited to about 20 feet by 20 feet after crews reduced dead brush following an earlier hillside blaze.

MILL VALLEY, CA — A small vegetation fire near Greenwood Way was contained after burning an area about 20 feet by 20 feet, with officials crediting earlier brush-clearing work for helping prevent the flames from spreading up a steep hillside.

The fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m. Oct. 13 near city open space, according to the City of Mill Valley. Mill Valley police officers arrived first and worked with Southern Marin Fire District crews to protect nearby residents and investigate the scene.

The fire occurred near an area above Hillside Avenue that burned earlier this year. Following that blaze, the fire district and city began clearing vegetation to address the buildup of dead brush left behind.

The work extended along the Greenwood Way Steps, Lanes and Paths corridor and into part of the burn scar within the Greater Mill Valley Fuel Break, a network of cleared areas intended to reduce wildfire risk around the city.

Officials said the preventative work helped keep the Oct. 13 fire from spreading up the steep slopes along the trail.
