Delta Flight Cancellations Have Minimal Impacts at Bay Area Airports

The cancellation of about 100 flights nationwide by Delta Air Lines Tuesday morning is causing minimal impacts at Bay Area airports, according to airport officials.

The airline is attempting to recover from a computer problem that began Monday morning and resulted in the cancellation of about 1,000 flights Monday, leaving some passengers stranded.

In addition to the canceled flights, the airline said it anticipated that about 200 flights nationwide would be delayed Tuesday morning.

Officials at San Francisco International Airport, Mineta San Jose International Airport and Oakland International Airport all are reporting minimal cancellations and delays.

Oakland airport spokeswoman Keonnis Taylor said Tuesday morning that the airport was seeing a repeat of Monday, when only a few flights had been affected.

"We appreciate the patience of all of our customers," Taylor said. "We're encouraging our customers to check the status of their flights before coming to the airport, for updates directly from Delta."

San Francisco International Airport reported that operations with Delta flights seemed to be back to normal, while officials at the San Jose airport reported just three cancellations and two delayed flights.

The cancellations began when the airline experienced a loss of power, impacting operations systemwide.

"We were able to bring our system back on line and resume flights within a few hours yesterday but we are still operating in recovery mode," Delta's senior vice president of operations Dave Holtz said in a statement.

"We are sorry for what many of our customers have experienced over the past 24 hours, including those who remain at airports and continue waiting for their flights. We are doing everything we can to return our operation to normal reliability, but we do expect additional delays and cancellations," Holtz said.

The number of canceled and delayed flights may grow overnight as the airline works to reset their operations and organize crews and aircrafts, according to Delta officials.

The airline is offering hotel rooms and accommodations to some stranded passengers whose cancellation requires an overnight stay.

Additionally, Delta is offering compensation to customers who have been significantly affected, the airline said.
