According to Marin County Sheriff's Lt. Doug Pittman, the incident unfolded around 9:12 a.m. in a small town along Highway 1 in Marin County, known as Dogtown.
"You can't make this stuff up," he told Patch.
A man who was visiting the area from Alabama apparently noticed his dog wasn't feeling well, so he decided to pull over along the highway and let the 60-70 pound mixed-breed animal relieve himself. An area resident saw this, and confronted him, according to Pittman.
"Obviously the resident wasn't happy the dog was doing that in front of his home," he said.
That's when the Alabama man went back to his car, and pulled out a weapon described as a 24-inch black metal machete, with a plastic handle, Pittman said.
"He aggressively walked toward the victim, while swinging it in the air," the lieutenant said.

That was enough to scare the local resident, who cowered down to the ground, before calling police once the tourist and his dog left, Pittman said. Acting on information provided by the resident, authorities located the Alabama man about an hour and a half later in the Muir Beach area.
Police questioned him, and ultimately arrested him on assault with a deadly weapon charges after he admitted to brandishing the knife, Pittman said.
"He admits to basically brandishing the machete, but his position is he wasn't trying to attack him, but scare him off," he said. "All the info that we have seems to indicate that the suspect took it way too far"
