Driver Dies After Car Sinks In Marin County Harbor, Passenger Rescued: Fire Officials

One person was pulled from the submerged vehicle and rushed to a local hospital where they were later pronounced dead, fire officials said.

SAUSALITO, CA — One person is dead and another was rescued after a vehicle submerged underwater in the Sausalito Yacht Harbor on Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

Crews from the Southern Marin Fire Protection District said they responded around 2:38 p.m. after receiving reports that a car with occupants inside had entered the water.

When fire officials arrived, the vehicle was approximately 10 feet underwater. One person had managed to escape the car before it sank, but the driver remained inside, officials said.

A dive operation was initiated by the fire department. The person who escaped the vehicle was rescued and brought onto the dock for evaluation, but the driver was pulled from the submerged vehicle and rushed to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, according to the Sausalito Police Department.

The survivor was evaluated at the scene.

Police confirmed that the identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

At least one firefighter sustained minor injuries during the rescue operation.

Following the rescue, the car was hoisted out of the water. The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the police department.
