Driver Identified in Deadly Highway 101 Crash

The man lived in Santa Clara, according to coroner's officials.

SAN RAFAEL, CA- The Marin County coroner’s office has identified a driver who died in a wrong-way driving collision on U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael last month as Sergei Aleshkov, 53, of Santa Clara.

Chief Deputy Coroner Darrell Harris said the coroner’s office and the Santa Clara County Public Administrator’s Office were unable to find any relatives of Aleshkov in the U.S. The public administrator’s office will attempt to locate Aleshkov’s next of kin outside the country, Harris said.

Aleshkov drove his 2000 Honda Civic north in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 in San Rafael around 11:20 p.m. on Nov. 30, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Honda collided with a southbound 2015 Peterbilt big-rig hauling two empty gas trailers.

The big-rig driver, a 58-year-old Willits man, tried to veer into the lane to his left to avoid a collision but a vehicle was traveling next to him, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said. The big-rig driver said he also was unable to stop before the collision.

As part of its investigation, the CHP is trying to locate the driver of the vehicle that was next to the big-rig, Barclay said.

The cause and manner of Aleshkov’s death is pending toxicology test results, Harris said.
