The beginner Opti class will be an introduction to sailing and seamanship for our youngest students. Students will be introduced to the water, some for the first time, in a fun and comfortable environment. They will be sailing 2 per boat in one of our 6 trainer Optis. The ability to sail upwind and gain confidence is the main focus.

Intermediate Opti (O2):

The Intermediate->Advanced Opti class will be geared for younger sailors who are ready to sail an Opti single-handed. Our coaches will be teaching more intricate sailing skills and towards the end of the class, racing will be introduced. They will review past skills and build new confidence in the sport.

Beginner Double-hand (D1):

The beginner C420/CFJ class will be an introduction to sailing and seamanship for our older students (or those who are too big for the Opti). Students will be introduced to sailing in depowered C420’s and CFJ’s which are double handed youth sailing boats. At first instructors may sail with their students with as many as 4 per boat. Eventually the students will be sailing double-handed. Upwind sailing and basic seamanship is the main focus.

Intermediate Double-hand (D2):

The Intermediate/Advanced C420/CFJ/Laser class will be geared for our older sailors who are ready to sail at a slightly higher level. More advanced skills and racing will be introduced by our coaches. This is a perfect class to build skills needed for our new Race Team. Spinnaker training, and laser sailing will be available for those who are ready.

Keel Boat (K)

The Keel Boat class is geared for those who are not interested in racing and want to enjoy sailing on a bigger boat. The class will be held in a Cal 20 with 1 instructor. Basic sailing, seamanship, and confidence building will be of focus. The class will sail longer distances and take frequent “bay tours.” 5-7 students per session will be allowed in this class.

Race Teams:

SYC race teams target more advanced sailors looking to focus on improving their boat handling and racing strategy. In addition to weekly practices, race team sailors compete locally (sometimes regionally) throughout the summer and rest of the year. Race Teams will practice 3 days per week, in 4 week sessions. Classes will run Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 10am-4pm. Lunch will be shorter and later than the other classes. We will attend BAYS (Bay Area Youth Sailing) regattas. The BAYS regatta schedule can be found here. Race Team class descriptions are below.

Opti Race Team (OR):

The Opti Race Team is geared towards those who want to focus on racing and local regatta participation. Students will begin competing in the Optimist Green Fleet which is designed for first year racers. Sessions will be 4 weeks long and participation is encouraged throughout the entire summer and beyond. Team members will be able to continue practicing and competing throughout the fall, winter, and spring. 5 members will be allowed for each summer session.

420/Laser/CFJ Race Team (DR):

The 420/Laser Race Team is geared for those who have graduated from the Opti and want to focus on racing and local regatta participation. Members will learn how to sail with spinnaker and trapeze on C420′s. Those who are interested will also be able to sail Lasers. 2 CFJ’s will be rigged with spinnakers this summer and we will attempt to attend CFJ Nationals in SoCal (July 28-31). 8-10 members will be allowed for each summer session.
