On Thursday, June 19, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), City of Mill Valley and the County of Marin will host an informational meeting at the Mill Valley Community Center from 6:30-8:00pm in the Cascade Room. This meeting will focus on FEMA's San Francisco Bay Coastal Flood Insurance Study and upcoming changes to flood insurance rate maps. Marin residents who live within a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) along the bay shoreline and who have flood insurance likely will be affected by the study.
This FEMA coastal study has modernized the Flood Insurance Rate Maps and resulted in changes to flood risk classifications and higher base flood elevations for some properties. Also, a number of properties were added to the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). FEMA has issues a preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map based on this coastal study for the community's review and formal comment from June 4 through September 2, 2014.
