Flea Infestation Closes Beloved Playground In Marin County

FAIRFAX, CA — Fairfax has temporarily closed the playground at a popular park after discovering a significant flea infestation, town officials announced.

The playground is expected to remain closed for about two weeks while the town works to eliminate the infestation, officials said.

Public Works Director Kristin Arnold said staff are evaluating treatment options that comply with Fairfax's ordinance prohibiting the use of pesticides on town property.

Town officials said the closure was ordered out of an abundance of caution to protect the health of park visitors.

"We recognize that Peri Park playground is a beloved gathering place, and we appreciate the community's patience while we address this issue," town officials said in a statement.

Residents are being asked to avoid the affected area until the playground reopens.

Officials also encouraged pet owners walking near the park to check their animals for fleas and consult a veterinarian about flea prevention.

The town said it will provide updates, including a projected reopening date, once a treatment plan has been finalized.
