King Tides Could Bring Flooding To Marin: NOAA

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County residents are being urged to prepare for possible flooding as king tides return Saturday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting exceptionally high tides during the five-day period. County officials warned recent king tides have run 0.4 to 0.8 feet higher than predicted because of warmer ocean water and windy conditions, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

Officials said historically flood-prone roads could be affected and urged drivers to watch for road closures.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to clear debris from gutters, storm drains and driveways, use sandbags where appropriate, avoid parking in low-lying areas and secure loose outdoor materials.

Officials also reminded the public never to drive or walk through floodwaters and to obey all road closure signs and barricades.

According to NOAA's forecast, the highest tides are expected during the evenings of Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 and shortly after midnight on Aug. 13.
