Marin CHP Hands Out 160 Tarps to Help Locals Properly Dispose of Waste, Recyclables

Did you know it's illegal to drive your waste or recyclables to a center without it being covered?

The following announcement was submitted for publication on behalf of the Marin CHP:

SAN RAFAEL, CA- On Thursday, March 17th, the Marin Area office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) teamed up with Marin Clean Highways to conduct a “Tarp Your Load” educational campaign at Marin Sanitary Service in San Rafael. The collaborative effort included Marin County Supervisors Kate Sears, Damon Connolly, and Steve Kinsey, along with their staff, as well as staff from Senator Mike McGuire’s office

CHP officers along with San Rafael Police Department, Marin County Department of Public Works, Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program, and Marin Sanitary Service were all on hand to speak with individuals arriving at the refuse drop off location in San Rafael about current laws in California which require drivers to cover their loads while driving to a disposal or recycling center. Approximately 160 tarps were distributed to drivers who arrived in vehicles with uncovered loads along with educational materials on how to properly cover loads in vehicles.

“The goal of this campaign was to educate drivers on the importance of covering loads on the way to disposal sites,” said Lieutenant Robert Mota, Acting Commander of the CHP’s Marin Area Office. “We are all very familiar with the sight of garbage and trash on the side of the road, and sometimes larger objects in the middle of traffic lanes. Properly securing and covering loads leads to clean roadways, as well as safer driving conditions. We hope by educating people of the importance, we can prevent debris and garbage from falling on our roads.”
