The dog was unable to get out on his own and his owner would not have been able to carry him out of the steep drainage area where he was found, Williams said.

The State Parks Department contacted the Search and Rescue team, and more than two dozen volunteers responded. Team members heard the hiker calling out and found him and his dog Shadow, who was carried out on a litter, Williams said.
