MARIN COUNTY, CA – The National Park Service wants to rehabilitate Fort Baker's historic boat shop and marina complex near the Golden Gate Bridge by operating a waterfront community center in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The proposal is in the GGNRA's 2000 Fort Baker master plan and environmental impact statement. The GGNRA on Monday released requests for qualifications from prospective partners to make the waterfront community center a reality.

The proposed marine center project would include redeveloping four structures and a leased marina as an additional option. The public marina would accommodate up to 60 boats primarily for day use and community programs.

The project also will include an event venue, food and beverage services and educational programs that may include maritime themes such as sailing and boat building.

Habitat restoration, trail enhancements and infrastructure improvements have already been completed, and the boat shop and marina represent the last state of Fort Baker's post-to-park transformation that began in 2000.

"This is a unique site with stunning views of the Golden Gate Strait," said GGNRA Superintendent Laura E. Joss. "It also has a rich history as a place where active military and veterans go to relax and take their boats out on the bay. We seek a proposal that allows the site to reach its full potential while offering an experience that is welcoming to all," Joss said.

Parties interested in the project have a 60-day period to respond to request for qualifications. The National Park Service will then select a short list of partners to receive a more detailed request for proposals in late 2019.

The selected partner will begin the rehabilitation of the complex in 2020-2021 and have an expected 20-year lease for operations.

Fort Baker is currently the home of The Bay Area Discovery Museum, Cavallo Point Lodge, Travis Air Force Base Marina/Presidio Yacht Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Golden Gate.
