Report Of Gunfire Leads To Chase, Standoff: Deputies

Two suspects from Marin County were arrested, including one who barricaded himself in a house for more than an hour, officials said.

MARIN COUNTY, CA – Two men were arrested Wednesday evening following a pursuit and an hour-long standoff with deputies, who initially were responding to reports of shots fired in unincorporated Marin County, according to authorities.

Deputies patrolling the Cole Drive area in Marin City were flagged down at about 4:30 p.m. by residents, who reported hearing gunfire and provided a description of the suspects' vehicle, the Main County Sheriff's Office said.

The vehicle was spotted and, after an unsuccessful attempt to pull the driver over, a chase ensued ending near Pacheco Street and Drake Avenue, officials said, adding that during the pursuit one of the individuals in the vehicle tossed out what appeared to be firearm.

One suspect, Henry Devon Walker, 40 of Marin City, stayed in the vehicle and was arrested.

However, a second suspect, Elijah Lee Howard, 38 also of Marin City, ran into a nearby home where he barricaded himself inside for more than an hour, deputies said.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office Hostage Negotiations Team, assisted by the California Highway Patrol, Sausalito Police Department and the Sheriff's Office Small Unmanned Aerial System unit, negotiated with the individual, who eventually surrendered peacefully at 6 p.m., the department said.

Deputies said they found a .22-caliber Taurus handgun after searching the area where the object was tossed during the chase. Recovered during a search of Howard’s residence were an AR15 assault rifle, a high capacity magazine (100 rounds), 30-round magazine and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, officials said.

Howard was booked into the Marin County Jail on the following charges: felon in suspected possession of a firearm and ammunition; suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm; alleged negligent discharge of a firearm; and suspicion of possession of a large capacity magazine.

Also booked at the Marin jail was Henry on charges including: felon in suspected possession of a firearm and owning ammunition; suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and carrying a loaded firearm with felony convictions; suspicion of destroying evidence; and alleged possession of a controlled substance.

There were no reports of injuries from the shots fired.
