Dam Vandals: $10K Reward Offered

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information identifying the suspects who vandalized a dam in Fremont last month, allowing 50 million gallons of water to wash away, police said today.

The suspects deliberately damaged an Alameda County Water District inflatable dam on Alameda Creek in the Niles area of Fremont in the early morning hours of May 21, according to police. The water was intended to serve the residents and businesses of Fremont, Newark and Union City, and was being used to recharge the Niles Cone Groundwater Basin, one of the water district’s main water supplies.

The vandalism caused the loss of around 50 million gallons of water-- enough to serve nearly 500 homes for one year, officials said today.

A surveillance video released today shows three suspects. They are described as an adult male with a medium build and short cropped hair, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and pants; a subject with a thin to medium build wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and pants; and a subject with a thin to medium build wearing a light-colored shirt and pants.

The water district is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.
