Elderly Women Targeted For Gold Jewelry Robberies

A suspect has been arrested in the San Jose robberies, which targeted women of Asian and East Indian descent.

SAN JOSE, CA — A 21-year-old San Jose man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of stealing gold chains from the necks of women in at least seven armed and strong-armed robberies within a three-month timeframe, police said today.

Police arrested Lawrence Carter on suspicion of three counts of robbery, two counts of elder abuse, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of vandalism.

The robberies, police said, occurred between July and September.

According to police, Carter allegedly targeted the victims, whom are all elderly women of East Indian and Asian descent, by approaching them and grabbing their chains from around their necks before fleeing. He
allegedly used a gun in at least one robbery, police said.

The case is still being investigated and police believe there may be other victims in similar robberies in San Jose and other cities in the Bay Area.
