Centuries Of Indian Art Come Together At New Peninsula Boutique

SAN CARLOS, CA — A new downtown San Carlos boutique aims to connect thousands of years of Indian artistic traditions with the work of contemporary artists and designers when it celebrates its grand opening this month.

Muditā will hold its grand opening Sept. 12 and 13, showcasing Indian art alongside furniture, sculpture, textiles, jewelry and home goods.

The boutique was founded by San Carlos resident Nidhi Patel, who said the idea grew from wanting her children to develop a deeper connection with Indian art and its history.

“Growing up, Indian culture was always around me, but its art still felt like a world I had only glimpsed,” Patel said. “I wanted my children to feel at home in that world and to know where its stories came from and see how they are still changing. Muditā grew from that wish.”

The shop will feature work from artists, artisans and designers across India who use established materials and techniques in contemporary pieces. Muditā also plans to provide information about the history and ideas behind the works on display.

Patel hopes the approach will introduce visitors to connections between historical Indian art and the work being produced today rather than presenting the two separately.

Family events and children’s programs are also planned, including storytelling and hands-on art activities.

The boutique takes its name from “muditā,” a Sanskrit word referring to joy felt in another person’s happiness.
