Home Nearly Destroyed By Fire In San Jose

Five adults and three dogs escaped from the flames.

SAN JOSE, CA — A fire nearly destroyed a San Jose home this morning, but firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbors, a fire captain said.

The fire was reported at 8:37 a.m. near the intersection of Singletary Avenue and Chapman Street, according to San Jose fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort.

Firefighters arrived about five minutes later. By then, the house was fire was heavily involved and at risk of spreading to other homes, Van Elgort said.

The home's five occupants, all adults, had managed to get out safely along with their three dogs. No one was injured by the fire, though the dogs got into a fight and injured each other.

Firefighters managed to get the fire under control about 30 minutes later and prevented spread to the other homes. But the first home sustained moderate to heavy damage and is uninhabitable, Van Elgort said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
