Inmate Who Died In Milpitas Jail Previously Involved in Armed SF Standoff

BREAKING: Patrick Missud was disbarred attorney and considered armed and suicidal during six-hour Civic Center incident last year.

MILPITAS, CA – An inmate at a Milpitas jail who died early Saturday morning has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as 48-year-old Patrick Missud, a disbarred lawyer who was involved in an armed standoff with San Francisco police last year.

According to the State Bar of California, Missud earned his bachelor's degree from Carnegie Mellon University and was admitted to the Bar in 2002.

After filing eight frivolous lawsuits between 2005 and 2011, Missud was deemed not eligible to practice law in California in 2013 before being disbarred in 2015.

On Sept. 24, police in San Francisco issued a shelter-in-place order for the area around Civic Center Plaza as Missud, described as an armed, suicidal suspect, engaged in a standoff for about six hours. The standoff ended with Missud ultimately surrendering to police.

According to Santa Clara County sheriff's officials, on Saturday at 4:48 a.m. correctional deputies in the M-8 housing unit of the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas heard a loud crash, and then found Missud unresponsive on the floor of the common area just below the second level.

Sheriff's officials said Missud's visible injuries were "consistent with falling from the second level." Custody staff administered first aid, including CPR, before Missud was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 5:56 a.m.

Sheriff's detectives are investigating with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and the medical examiner's office, Sgt. Rich Glennon said.

Investigators believe that Missud jumped with the intention of taking his own life.

Missud had been in custody for more than 50 days before his death, according to sheriff's officials.
