Better Business Bureau: Make Your Move A Better Move

BBB warns consumers about scams before hiring a moving company.

If researched and planned appropriately, moving can be a smoother process than most people expect. The best way to make your move as stress-free as possible is to do a little due diligence before the actual move date. Moving can be distressing, especially if you are placing your valued furniture and household items in the hands of a moving company. Better Business Bureau serving San Diego, Imperial and Orange Counties suggests you consider the following before you hire a moving company:

· A common scam to watch out for is the low-ball estimate. Disreputable movers will give you a low estimate to secure your business, but end up charging you a much higher price than originally quoted. A lot of times the mover will cite larger than expected loads and more weight as reasons for a higher charge. To avoid this pitfall, check out the moving company for any complaints filed regarding higher than expected costs and move on to the next company if you see these.

· Another red flag to watch out for is if the mover asks for a large deposit amount. It’s not uncommon for a company to request a small deposit to reserve your move date. However, requesting a large amount on the frontend is not a common practice.

· “Losing” valuables such as jewelry or other expensive items is almost always a given during a move. To ensure your valued items are replaced, BBB suggest you purchase insurance from the company. With this insurance, you will be sure to have your items repaired or replaced after the move.
