Cal State Fullerton Rape Occurred Off Campus, Officials Say
A student was attacked, just not at Cal State Fullerton, officials said Wednesday. Authorities are still seeking a suspect in this case.
ORANGE COUNTY, CA — A victim who claimed she was raped in a Cal State Fullerton parking garage elevator early Monday morning misinformed authorities as to the location of her attack, officials said.
"This in no way minimizes what has occurred," officials said at a press conference, Wednesday afternoon. "The University Police Department will continue to address public safety on our campus."
The woman was sexually attacked, and did go to St. Joseph's Hospital, who contacted authorities as to the nature of the attack. Working on the assumption the victim's statements were true, campus police investigators reviewed the footage from the Nutwood parking structure area cameras. That was when police found inconsistencies in the victim's story.

"We contacted the survivor again, and got more information from her," Capt. Scot Willey of Cal State Fullerton Police said.
Upon learning of the discrepancy, campus police immediately contacted Orange County Sheriff's Department, who has stepped in for the next part of this investigation. The city where the rape took place was not disclosed, only that it was in OCSD jurisdiction.

"We thank the Orange County Sheriff's Department for stepping in, and we will continue to support our student," he said.
OCSD has not yet commented on the attack, or information about the suspect.
If the suspect is a Cal State Fullerton student, campus police will continue to help the OCSD with the investigation. For now, the embattled campus police have stepped aside.
"The survivor will not face any charges," Willey told those present. "There is no perfect victim when it comes to being attacked and a survivor of rape. We will support her and continue to do so, including counseling and services, whatever she needs in order to continue being a student."
Orange County Sheriff's Department investigators will be handling the investigations going forward, Willey said.
Authorities firmly stand behind the survivor.
