City Recognizes New 'Girls And Women In Sports' Day
The City of Mission Viejo is recognizing Feb. 4 as National Girls and Women in Sports Day, city officials told Patch.
MISSION VIEJO, CA — The City of Mission Viejo is recognizing Feb. 4 as National Girls and Women in Sports Day to celebrate its ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding athletic opportunities for girls and women throughout the city.
"National Girls and Women in Sports Day highlights the importance of breaking down long-standing gender stereotypes within the sports industry and reinforces the message that girls and women belong in every aspect of athletics," City Spokesperson Kelly Tokarski told Patch.
"This celebration also underscores the value of physical activity and encourages girls and women to build confidence, discover their strengths, and reach their full potential through sport."

Tokarski highlighted one example of the city's commitment: the city's partnership with Matt Leinart Flag Football to offer a "Females in Flag" league.
According to Tokarski, the program has experienced significant growth and introduced a new athletic opportunity for Mission Viejo girls for three seasons.
