Dance/Rhythm Class Gets Its Beach on to Raise Money For Special Olympians.

Class Raises $300 to Sponsor a Special Olympics Athlete.

In just about a week, 170 athletes from Spain and Indonesia will descend on Mission Viejo and take part in the 14th Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Special Olympics World Games is an international sporting event for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

They will train and get used to our climate before the games begin in Los Angeles. The City of Mission Viejo and the community will host the athletes as part of the Host Town Program.

The success of these games depends on community groups, businesses, organizations, sponsors and volunteers. In other words each of you can help.

It’s not too late to raise money. The MV Host Town Committee for the Special Olympics is trying to sponsor 25 more athletes. Margot Ferron has put out a challenge, “I will match your donations up to $3,000.”

Ferron’s summer, dance/rhythm class taught by Lisa Messenger’s at Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center accepted the challenge.

For their last class they chose to have a beach themed shake down. Because the class is indoors there was no sand, no water, but it didn’t stop them from wearing swimsuits with cover-ups, hats, crazy glasses and shoes. Prizes were awarded for best hat, sunglasses, dressed and swimsuit.

Messenger’s class knows how to have fun. They come dressed for most holidays--Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s and are entertained by a handful of pranksters.

The class is sponsoring an athlete, will you? The cost to support an athlete for three days is $300. That includes lodging, transportation, meals, use of athletic facilities and activities.
