Haggen to Close Mission Viejo Grocery Store

The northwest grocery chain gambled on a massive West Coast expansion this year, but now it will close 22 of its newly opened stores.

Less than a year after opening in Mission Viejo amid a massive West Coast expansion, Haggen, a grocery chain out of Washington, will close down its Mission Viejo store along with 22 other locations in four states.

Haggen will also close three other Orange County locations in Tustin and Irvine. Almost instantly after expanding from 18 stores to 164 around California, Arizona, and Oregon, the chain struggled to attract customers. Most of the stores being closed or sold were acquired as part of the transaction in which Albertsons LLC and Safeway divested 146 stores.

“Haggen’s goal going forward is to ensure a stable, healthy company that will benefit our customers, associates, vendors, creditors, stakeholders as well as the communities we serve,” Haggen CEO Pacific Southwest, Bill Shaner said in a written release. “By making the tough choice to close and sell some stores, we will be able to invest in stores that have the potential to thrive under the Haggen banner.”
