Home Computer Security 101

This is a series of tips to help ensure your home computer is secure.

Install anti-virus software – This may seem like a no-brainer, but many people (due either to bad advice or simple ignorance) remain unprotected online.

Stay updated – If you ignore the regular Windows update requests thinking they are spam, stop now.

Enable firewall – Windows & Apple systems both come with built-in firewalls. Antivirus software typically does as well, so make sure you enable one of them.

Always back up data – Don’t rely on Gmail to hold all of your important information. You could lose account access at any time, so make sure you back up important things to an external source.

Wifi - When using Wifi make sure you enable encryption. This will prevent hackers from intercepting your data and also keep your neighbors from sharing your connection.
