Anaheim Large Gas Leak Causes Evacuations, Road Closures

A gas leak near the 57 Freeway and Orangewood Avenue led to evacuations and temporary road closures on Tuesday.

ANAHEIM, CA — A major gas leak off the 57-Freeway and Orangewood Avenue led to evacuations and road closures in the Anaheim area Tuesday afternoon, according to Anaheim Fire and Rescue. Emergency responders arrived at the scene of a large natural gas leak at a construction site on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m., according to Anaheim Fire Capt. Daron Wyatt.

A 2-inch gas line was hit and the construction crew was evacuated from the site, Wyatt said. Sempra Energy arrived on scene at just before 12:15 p.m. to shut off the gas while evacuation orders were issued.

Some of the addresses in the 2100 block of Dupont were ordered to shelter in place, while temporary evacuation orders were given for the 2100 block of South State College, the 2200 block of east Orangewood, and the 21oo block of South Dupont while Sempra Energy did their work capping the ruptured gas line.

"Those guys are real pros," Wyatt said of the gas company workers.

Orangewood Avenue was closed from State College Boulevard through Rampart. Roads were reopened by 1 p.m.
