George Floyd Prom Invite Shocks OC Parents At Aliso Niguel High School

ALISO NIGUEL, CA — An Aliso Niguel High School prom invitation made regional headlines over the weekend for its reportedly racist message, NBC Los Angeles said Friday.

Two parents of an Aliso Niguel High School student told NBC Los Angeles their daughter showed them a photo of the prom invitation on social media Thursday night.

They said the post shows an Aliso Niguel High School student holding a prom invite that reads: "If you went to prom with me, it would take my breath away," next to a photo of George Floyd.

Capistrano Unified School District responded to the social media post in a statement, NBC Los Angeles reported.

"The sign is disgusting, lacks cultural sensitivity, is deeply offensive, and does not reflect the values we strive for in our school district," the district said in a statement. "We serve a diverse community and we value all of our students and families. This is heartbreaking and in instances such as this, we work with school leadership to address the situation."

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man from Minneapolis, was killed in 2020 while under police custody. His death was ruled as a homicide after two autopsies and video footage revealed that during Floyd's arrest, an officer was kneeling on his neck for over nine minutes.

Floyd reportedly pleaded with the officer to get off his neck, saying "I can't breathe" several times before eventually falling silent.
