Relay For Life Mission Viejo Rocks the 80s.

They hit the floor dancing to tunes from the band Five Foot Rabbit.

The 80’s are back and that can mean only one thing to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Mission Viejo. It was time to step it up and celebrate the American Cancer Society’s 30 years of Relay, honor our loved ones who are currently fighting cancer and those who have survived, plus salute our caregivers.

The event took place at the Norman P. Murray Community & Senior Center, in Mission Viejo, CA. It was free to all cancer survivors, caregivers, their families and friends.

More than 100 people emulated the 80s, dressed in acid washed jeans, lacy fingerless gloves, bright neon colors, leggings, legwarmers, headbands and pumps. They hit the floor dancing to tunes from Pearl Jam, Motley Crue and the Romantics played by the band, Five Foot Rabbit.

After singing, “A Million Miles Away“ and “Just Like Heaven,” lead vocalist, Kyle Russo told the audience he lost his Mom in August 2014 to small cell lung cancer.

The guest speaker for the evening was Toni Colley, an American Cancer Society’s Hero of Hope. Colley started relaying in 1996 in Mission Viejo. Her life has been terrorized by cancer. She lost her Dad to kidney cancer in 1984 and her brother to colorectal cancer when he was 52 years old. Her mother and sister have been affected by cancer as well.

Colley has endured melanoma twice and breast cancer. She continued by saying, “I was so angry, I felt like someone tied my hands behind my back. I was so overwhelmed- all I knew was to fight back.”

At relay Colley was greeted by other survivors and found the event to be fun and exciting. “As a Survivor the most important thing you learn is Hope.” Her Mom raised money for the American Cancer Society as well.

Smells of fresh brisket and potatoes filled the air, but it was Larry McLemore’s famous bundt cakes That had everyone clamoring for more and of course, the recipe. This year, McLemore has made his “Cakes For A Cure,” to fundraise.

Later in the evening prizes from various Mission Viejo businesses in the form of gift certificates were raffled such as $100 from Wineworks. Guests were also given a coupon for a free haircut from Sports Clip.
