ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Sheriff Don Barnes wants to be pushed Over the Edge. He's signed up for a unique event to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics Southern California, according to the department. This fundraising event, provides participants the thrilling opportunity of rappelling down a building in an exciting and completely safe environment.

The event will be held on August 10, 2019 at the Orange County Hyatt Regency in Garden Grove. At 16 stories up, participants like Barnes will have the distinction of rappelling over 195 feet.

"With your support, we can enrich the lives of thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities and their communities through sports, education, and athlete health," event organizers said.

Every dollar raised by Special Olympics not only provides equipment, uniforms, and training for our athletes, but also gives them empowerment, joy, and improved health.

Sheriff Barnes and the OC Sheriff's Department have been proud partners of Special Olympics for many years, participating in Law Enforcement Torch Run activities including serving on the Regional Leadership Council, hosting Tip A Cop events, volunteering at the bi-annual Regional Games and running the Flame of Hope through our contract cities.

Sheriff Don Barnes needs to raise a minimum of $1,500 to take part in the event. As of this report, he's raised just over $1,000.
