Bear and Cubs Spotted in Foothills Early Sunday

Authorities were called to two different sightings of the bears in Sierra Madre.

A mother bear and her two cubs kept officers busy as the furry creatures hung around a hilly neighborhood Sunday.

The animals were first seen in the hills behind a residence in the 500 block of Sierra Meadows Drive around 9:07 a.m. Officers watched the bears, eventually scaring them off with non-lethal pepper ball rounds. The bears eventually wandered off northbound, said Sergeant Ruben Enriquez of Sierra Madre Police.

About an hour later, the bears were spotted again in the same area. Officers kept watch on the three bears, all of which wandered off on their own, Enriquez said.
