Boy, 6, Critical in Accident Crossing Street Near Monrovia
The boy and his mother were not in a crosswalk when they attempted to cross North Vernon Avenue.

AZUSA, CA -- A 6-year-old boy struck by a vehicle in Azusa was in critical condition Friday but expected to survive, authorities said.
It happened at 7:42 p.m. Thursday in the 700 block of North Vernon Avenue, said Sgt. Robert J. Landeros of the Azusa Police Department.
The boy and his mother were outside the crosswalk as they attempted to cross North Vernon Avenue and he was struck by a pickup truck, Landeros said.

"The driver of the vehicle stopped after the collision and rendered aid to the child," the sergeant said.
Firefighters stabilized the boy at the scene and he was airlifted to a hospital with injuries including major head trauma, a fractured femur and internal injuries, said Azusa police Sgt. John Madaloni.

The boy had stable vital signs at the hospital this morning and was expected to survive, Landeros said.
Drugs and alcohol were not believed to have been factors in the crash, he said.
