Science and Art Education Surging at Foothill Oaks Academy

There is no question that science and art play a foundational role in the education of young students. With this in mind, Foothill Oaks Academy, located in Duarte, CA, has determined to focus their energies on these valuable educational building blocks and has witnessed amazing results.

Hands-on science exploration thoroughly engages students in the important domain of science education and creates excitement for learning. Attracting students to future careers in science and engineering begins in the early years by encouraging close observation, looking for evidence, asking questions and giving opportunity to discover. At Foothill Oaks the resident paleontologist visits every class bi-weekly to show artifacts or pictures, and to relate captivating stories from his vast knowledge and personal experience. On the alternate week, classes visit a newly renovated science lab where a science specialist provides hands-on science experiments reinforcing subject matter being taught by classroom teachers. Parents rave about this emphasis on the sciences, and students gain a firm foundation for scientific thought and practice.

Arts education teaches appreciation of visual aesthetics, enhances academic test performance, and gives opportunity to invent and create. At Foothill Oaks, art history is combined with projects relevant to the medium and techniques being studied. A variety of creative methods are chosen to build self-confidence and give all students a chance to excel. As a result, of the 60 student art pieces entered at this year’s LA County Fair, all earned either a first or third place ribbon. One 7th grade entry earned the Teen Sweepstakes Award for her Monet-style landscape.
