A Film Going Somewhere

The "Race to Nowhere," a film local leaders and educators recommend parents will see, screens tonight at Crescenta Valley High School.

Call it a wake up call, a reminder or just a notice - kids are overwhelmed and educators want parents to know why.

Glendale police Officer Matt Zakarian hopes parents see what their children are up against tonight at the .

"I encourage parents to watch this film, which will help them understand the society pressures our youth are going through or will go through on a day to day basis," Zakarian told Patch. "Having the ideas will help them help the kids cope with the different issues of stress related problems."

Zakarian is president of the Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition, a local organization built to foster awareness and maintain a safe, drug-free community. 

"I am hoping parents will realize they need to spend more quality time with their kids and mentor their responsibility," Zakarian said. "Stress can often lead to alcohol or drug abuse."

Stress doesn't just begin at school - the entire community is responsible for helping children, Zakarian said.

"Every school and every student feels the stress of school," Zakarian said.  "Its not just our schools, its our community and its in every community. Lets together help our youth through these troubling years of their life."
