From organizer Melissa Madden:
I organize special events to raise money for causes that are very near and dear to my heart. I can’t believe how lucky I am to be working for such a wonderful and worthwhile cause. My father served 27 years for the Los Angeles Police Department and cherished every day he was in the department. He was a remarkable man full of compassion and strength, he simply was my hero. We lost him to cancer one and a half years ago and I have been fighting for something he believes in ever since. The Police Departments all stick together, it is a family. When one is down; we help each other my lifting one another up. I have always used the following Jerry Rice quote that best describes our fellow officers’:
“Today I will do what others won’t so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t."

My good friend is Marjory “Jory” Jacobs and she is a Lieutenant for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. On May 8, she will join hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the country who will bicycle along varying routes, each over 300 miles, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial (NLEOM) in Washington, D.C. This year, The Police Unity Tour – Southern California Chapter will have 75 police officers representing L.A.P.D., L.A. County Sheriff, Beverly Hills P.D., Burbank P.D., Palos Verdes Estates P.D., Pasadena P.D. and Alhambra P.D. Our route will take us from Somerset, N. J. to Philadelphia, PA, and on to Washington, D.C., where on May 11 a candlelight vigil will be held at the Memorial. On that night the names of the officers who have died in the line of duty in 2011 will be read before a crowd of thousands.
The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness about the police officers that have died in the line of duty. In 2011, 163 officers were killed nationwide, six from California. Our motto is, “We Ride for Those Who Died”. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum. Since its’ inception in 1997, the Police Unity Tour has raised $8 million to support the NLEOM, with $1.5 million raised during last years’ 15th Annual Tour.
