Patch Blog: Sometimes, 'Legal Notice' Means Not Telling Anybody

Residents received no notice of the proposed installation of seven streetlights at Rosemont Middle School—one in back of the campus and six in front on Rosemont Avenue.

You would think that the property owners who will be most affected would have a voice in the county’s decision to light the street - but you would be wrong.

By state law, the county needs to only notify the property owners who will be assessed the cost of operating the streetlights. Since all of the property to be assessed belongs to the and the , the residential neighbors were not told.

At night, six streetlights in front of could give that little piece of otherwise dark street the appearance and appeal of an airport runway.  Virtually all of the school’s activities occur during the day, so the school won’t notice; neither will the water district, since their property houses only a small pumping station.

But I’m willing to bet that the people who live on that street will notice.

In wanting to be good neighbors, you would think that the school district and the water district would have checked with the community before agreeing to the streetlights, but again – you would be wrong. Both agencies have signed off on the plan.
