Patch Blog: "Tuned In" Begins on Easter Sunday
New series "Tuned In" by Lee Cook incorporates popular television shows at La Crescenta Presbyterian!
Lee Cook, the Director of Spiritual Formation at will offer a three-week sermon series titled “Tuned In.”
The new series, which will make references to some popular television shows both old and new, will focus on helping folks to “tune in” to the life God has in store for them. When asked what inspired him to use the medium of television for this new series Cook responded, “The television is such a powerful symbol. Almost everyone in our culture uses the television to get information and entertainment. It is easily the most influential cultural and social innovation of the 20th Century.”
The series is divided into three components “Amazing Grace,” “Father Knows Best,” and “Days of Our Lives.”

“I have to admit that television has been a weakness of mine over the years," Cook said. "I have a special affinity for that wonderful decade we call the “80’s. In all seriousness, like all forms of media, television can be a powerful force for good or a powerful force for negative purposes. It’s all in how you use the media, and the intentions behind the creative people in charge.”
Just in case you were wondering, Cook provided a list of his favorite tv shows and commentary in his own words upon request:

Without a doubt The Andy Griffith Show is my favorite. I love the universality of the show (and I grew up in a town a lot like Mayberry). Another favorite is Star Trek: the Next Generation. As a geeky teenager, this show gave me at least an hour a week when I didn't feel like such dork. Growing Pains was my top pick from the 1980’s. Mike Seaver (Kirk Cameron) was my idol. Although I bet Mike Seaver didn't watch Star Trek. Friends was my 1990’s pick. The show started when I entered college, and I really related to the characters--especially Chandler. Castle is my most recent favorite. Actually, I've always loved Nathan Fillion (I miss Firefly), and I think the show is well written.
The new sermon series will be offered in both services at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church. The 9:15 a.m. service includes contemporary music with full band. The 11 a.m. service is more traditional in nature and features the choir and incorporates hymns and organ.
On Easter Sunday there will be childcare available for children ages 6 months through kindergarten and Sunday School is offered for older children on non-holiday Sundays.
