Christopher Simpson an English composer, teacher, theorist and considered one of the greatest viol players in the history of that istrument.
Valentine Oldis an English composer best known for his consort and chamber works written for the viola da gamba during the English Restoration period.
Attilio Ariosti an Italian composer and viola d'amore virtuoso. He was co-director with G.F.Handel of the Royal Academy of Music in London and may have been a spy for the French court.
Richard Cobb an English composer who was also the resident organist for the 5th Earl of Bath.
Johann Schop a German composer and virtuoso violinist. One of his melodies was used by J.S. Bach.
ARTIST BIOS:
In addition to the viola d’amore, Adriana Zoppo performs on violin, viola, baroque violin and baroque viola. Director/curator of the Glendale Noon Concerts’ early music sub-series, Zoppo, with Ergo Musica, is heard there frequently. Previously a member of the Carmel Bach Festival, she plays with the original instrument ensembles Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Los Angeles Baroque Players, Bach Collegium San Diego and the Corona del Mar Baroque Festival, where she has appeared as viola d’amore soloist. She has also played regularly with the Santa Barbara, New West, Pacific, Long Beach and Pasadena symphonies, the St. Matthew Chamber Orchestra and other local ensembles.
Zoppo plays for film, TV, solo artist recordings and liveshows of all musical styles and genres.
Shanon Zusman is adjunct professor of viola da gamba and violone at the University of Southern California and Claremont Graduate University. He holds a D Doctorate in Musical Arts in Early Music Performance from the USC Thornton School of Music, where he studied with James Tyler. Shanon became interested in early music and the history of the double bass in particular while studying with José Vázquez in Vienna, Austria, on a Fulbright grant. He has appeared with the Bach Collegium San Diego, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Camerata Pacifica Baroque, Los Angeles Bach Society, Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, and Concordia Clarimontis. Shanon has taught at the national Conclave of the Viola da Gamba Society of America since 2006 and coaches the southern California chapter of the society, Viols/West. He also teaches courses in Music Appreciation and Music Fundamentals at Santa Monica College and College of the Canyons.
